Free school meals 'revolt' claim

During the pilots, the take-up rate in primaries one to three rose to 75%
Labour has claimed that councils are in "open revolt" over the Scottish Government's free school meal plans.

Five to seven-year-olds will get free meals from 2010 but no new money will be given, with funding instead included in the local government settlement.

when i was at school in london in the war years, only poor kids were given school meals for free, virtually every kid in the schools were poor so we all had free school meals, so really free school meals is nothing new, p s we all hear that the school meals of yesteryear were orrible and uneatable, thats not true, they served up some pretty good grub considering rationing and all that , i could still kill for the old semolina pudding they used to serve up, sheer bliss, ginger,

Tafscot/ gingerjim, Its not about the kind of meals the kids get, its the way the scottish labour party are in a uproar because the First Minister {SNP} is to make all meals free in 2010. And yet in downing st they are trying to end child poverty in this country. I firmly believe the SNP is going down the right road in giving every child free meals.

sorry admin, whether the scottish govt or that lot at westminster give kids free school meals or not, they will never eradicate child poverty, its been here since time began, all the time you have rich and poor you will never get rid of it, even under a communist govt the east europeans had terrible child poverty, i myself during the war years endured poverty , which would make todays generation shudder, when you look at the charities in africa and india begging for money, you cant help but notice that the kids are malnourished and sick , but looking at the adults fat well fed well dressed , how come, another thing when i see a lot of these ads for children in poverty , take a close look , a lot of those kids wear enough gold and jewels in their ears and round their necks to sink the titanic again , as regards poverty in this country i say most have never seen it and never will , real poverty i mean , one more thing if parents are given benefits to feed their families , why dont they feed the families instead of boozing it down the local or the betting shop, dont buy new cars and tv sets spend the money on the kids, which takes me back to where i started , you will never get rid of poverty , ginger

Is giving away free lunches about eradicating child poverty or is it really about trying to address a public health crisis that stems from poverty? And if the government is footing the bill, which means tax payers are footing the bill – is creating a greater tax burden helping alleviate child poverty? (I am assuming poor people pay tax of some kind whether it is sales, license, etc. – perhaps that’s a false assumption.)

Or is it a sweetner to the families of scotland to bring them in givivg support to the snp in 2010 as they are going to hold a referendum in breaking the union away from the uk giving homerule to scotland. Question
