Soldier vows to return to action
ITN - 13 minutes agoA soldier who almost died after being shot by the Taliban has vowed to head back into action in Afghanistan.
Lance Corporal John Dippnall still has the bullet lodged in his back but says he is determined to return to duty as soon as he is well enough.
The 22-year-old, who was serving with the 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment, was taking part in a covert mission in Helmand Province when he was attacked.
The bullet entered through his collar bone, and travelled through his vital organs before becoming lodged in a muscle in his lower back.
Due to his injuries surgeons had to cut away part of his left lung, repair his diaphragm and remove his spleen and kidney, but left the bullet in place, believing that it would cause more damage to remove it.
Despite his ordeal the young soldier is in fighting spirits and was discharged from hospital after only two weeks.
He said: "I've been given a chance. Technically I should be dead. Don't take anything for granted just live life to the fullest." |
