I have just read on the BBC Wourld Tele text that Bullying is or has taken place at the Catterick Garrison one of the largest in the UK.

2 Cpl's have been suspended following a investgation to the fact.

A onder cover reporter spent 6 month's onder cover to investigate the Bullying.

The MoD said bullying will not be accepted after the incedent at Deep Cut Barracks in Surry when recruits died.

I have to agree with the MoD. This should not be hapning with the situation of onder manning in the Armed Forces at this presant time.

Ok be Firm but No Bullying.

This is not the way to TRAIN men.

During basic training a number of "regimental washes" were dished out to members of your own squad whose personal hygeine left a lot to be desired, On most occasions the NCO,s were aware of this and stood back to make sure it did not go over the top.
However what has been going on recently goes way beyond the acceptable

blackdown or deepcut as they now call it, in the 50s was a very hard camp and during my time we heard of suicides, catterick was also the same sort of camp as was most army camps in those days, there have always been suicides in army camps and no doubt there always will be, its just that the media now has a free hand in publishing all these problems, i have always said that in the armed forces you will get young people that are just not cut out for the life so many will take the easy way out, i truly believe these things have been happening in the forces for centuries and i dont think it will ever be stamped out, very much like bullying in schools, ginger

Yesterday the BBC1 showed the the report on TV that was made by the reporter.

I have to say he was lucky to get out as it was at the last minit and according his CO he was a very good recruit.

If the Army had said NO
He would have been in for 4 years.
At 12,000+ pound a year.

I found the build up to the BBC story more exciting than the actual story? Okay the lad spoke to plenty of guys supposedly bullied? But it was their word NO actual Proof,
I agree with you Ginge? I was at Blackdown and saw the odd "bullying" later heard of one suicide, but lets be honest the Army is okay for some, and certainly not for others, Unfortunately those that cant hack it tend to lose it completely.
My time in Basic training was not all roses? at times i could willingly have done a runner, but i stuck it as most did, and I can honestly say I loved my time in the forces.
My Grandson has just applied and been accepted for AFC Harrowgate, he is 16, personally i would not have believed he would make the grade, but all credit he is going to give it a go, I know it will make as man of him.

Ok In the RAF was also not a bed of Rose's but it was great
and yaa for 12 years the best years of My life thats for sure.

I would do it all over again.

If or There was Bullying only the Police can do the investigation
No one else The people responsable are innocent till proven Guilty.

But they have to interview all the people that is involved.

But with Training Men to go and Fight you have to be Firm and not use unnesasary FORCE and that goes with inteviewing Prisner's after a crime.
Be it Theft or Bullying.

From what i saw there was no bullies, it was a lot of harsh words, if you can't hack that then you are in the wrong place.

we talk of bullying in basic training but was it really bullying, ok the ncos swore a lot and made you dash around a bit, they even put the fear of god into a lot of recruits ,but look back on the finished article, a well trained man , who could take orders , a very smart man , a member of a finely tuned fighting machine, you just dont get those results by asking him nicely as sgt wilson of dads army used to say , all in all some of those so called bullying tactics, kept an awful lot of british servicemen alive during times of war, gingerjim.

Basic Training is there to get you fit and thinking like a Soldier in a very short space of time. I cannot understand those that moan about it, although IF some NCO's in Training Battalions have to resort to actually punching and the like of recruits then they themselves are scum
Our NCO's in training were hard, if you mucked up you went on a run in full battle order or something, we thought that was bullying?
I suppose you will always get the bad egg/ who thinks being in charge so to speak means they can do what they like, Rather a sad outlook

tafscot, this wil make you smile, during my basic training in the 50s the lance jack in charge of us just hated my guts , i dont know why, it was something that happened as soon as he clapped eyes on me, i did not let it bother me, but he used to get me doing all the dirty fatigues like the brass filter rings in the urinals, i had to brasso them only me , wash stairs with the old toothbrush , cut the grass round the officers mess with a pair of nail scissors, i took it all in my stride, after all i had signed on for it, he stopped short of punching me though i think he realised i would have thumped himback, any way i ended up in an old coffee factory in viersen in germany, it was rhine sub depot , 15 abod, i remember it well i was provost cpl and stood outside having a quick ciggie when a three tonner pulled up with a bunch of new bods from blighty, out jumped my old tormentor, stripped to private, his face was a picture when he saw me, needless to say his feet never touched the ground from that time to when he was posted on again , happy days were indeed here again , ginger jim,
