Press Assoc. - 33 minutes agoAn army recruit has been found hanging at an army camp just a mile away from Deepcut Barracks, police said.

The 29-year-old man, who has not been named, died despite attempts by paramedics to resuscitate him.

He was found at Alexander Barracks at the Pirbright army camp in Surrey, close to Deepcut where four young recruits died as a result of bullet wounds in separate incidents between 1995 and 2002.

A spokeswoman for Surrey Police said: "The Ministry of Defence is fully co-operating with the inquiries being made by police."

It is understood that the man had arrived at the training centre just days ago.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: "It is with deep sadness that the MoD confirms the death of a new recruit at Pirbright Training Centre in Surrey on 21 September 2008.

"Next of kin have been informed and our thoughts and sympathies are with the deceased individual's family and friends at this difficult time. Surrey Police are conducting an investigation so it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage."

Recruits Sean Benton, 20, of Hastings, East Sussex; James Collinson, 17, of Perth; Geoff Gray, 17, of Seaham, Co Durham, and Cheryl James, 18, of Llangollen, Denbighshire, all died at the Deepcut training camp.

An investigation into their deaths by Nicolas Blake QC found no evidence for families' claims that they had been "bullied to death".

Alexander Barracks at Pirbright opened earlier this year and was designed to offer modern, comfortable accommodation for new recruits.

This just beggars belief/ what in hells name drove someone to do this? after a matter of days in the Army? he either was targetted by the bully boys or the poor lad had problems deep down.. It is no wonder that the forces in general are struggling for recruits?

It does not send out a good message to the young men and women that are thinking in joining the Army. I've never read anything like this that goes on in training units of the airforce and navy.

Cant say i have either? wonder why that is? maybe the fact that the Army go in for more of the DRILL side of things? I dont know? maybe we need the views of someone who went through the ranks in either the RAF or Navy?
Have to say though that back in my day, I never heard of anything of the like going on?
Plenty of shouting by the NCO's and maybe a few Kit changes or runs/ but nothing else. My Grandson has just signed up to go to AFC Harrowgate in January? must admit I am getting a wee bit worried?

So if he had been called John Smith you might not have jumped to the same conclusion???
Why do we have to presume bullying instantly.
Yes its near Deepcut but was it essential to the story to dredge up old facts about Deepcut????
I really wish people would at least wait till all the facts are out before jumping on the ARMY=BULLYING band wagon.
And Yes the RAF/NAVY also had there bullying problems look closely enough at any organisation and you will find it, there is no such thing as a Bully free workplace.
