Iraq Plans to Build Ferris Wheel to Lure Tourists
August 27, 2008, Associated Press
Iraq is calling on companies to submit designs to build a giant Ferris wheel in Baghdad - the latest in a string of lavish proposals to show the capital as a leisure friendly city.
The Ferris wheel will be about 200 meters (650 feet) high with air-conditioned compartments that would each carry up to 30 passengers, Adel al-Ardawi, a media official with Baghdad's municipality, said yesterday.
Three possible locations have been selected, but officials are waiting to see proposals before choosing one, he said, declining to give an estimated construction cost or timeline.
Now that insurgent attacks and sectarian bloodshed have declined, Iraqis are venturing outside their homes. Families are seen relaxing at night in parks and children go swimming. On Monday, tens of thousands of football fans cheered their club in a Baghdad stadium.
Officials are using the downturn in violence to begin promoting tourism. A tough sell in a country where infrastructure is weak and bombings still occur daily.
Robert Kelley, an American businessman, announced plans last month to build a luxury hotel in Baghdad's Green Zone.
Iraq's Tourism Board is seeking investors to develop a "romantic" island on the Tigris River in Baghdad - once a popular honeymoon spot for newlywed Iraqis, the US military announced this week. The project would include a six-star hotel, an 18-hole golf course and a country club, the military said in a press release.
"
The city of Baghdad has a depth of history and a cultural legacy that can be a basis for attracting and fostering tourism," said the release, which did not mention the war. |

Considering the social/political/religious/health issues that need to be resolved in Iraq, this is just a stupid idea. It’s beyond me why it’s even been placed on the table for consideration. Finding a need to build a Ferris wheel before (among other things) resolving basic sanitation issues is bizarre. There’s no doubt economic development should be encouraged, but it needs to be in line with reality. You know, there is a clear difference between a vision and a hallucination – Leadership 101. |
