U.K. Military to Look at Alternatives for Bearskin Caps
Associated Press, Tuesday, September 2, 2008
The British military said it will actively look for alternatives to the real bearskins that are currently used to make the Royal Guards' traditional hats.
The announcement follows a Tuesday morning meeting with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a U.S.-based animal-rights organization that has been pushing the Ministry of Defence to stop using the pelts of
Canadian brown bears to make the tall, black hats worn by guards at Buckingham Palace.
PETA has argued that using the bear pelts is cruel, and that there is no reason the distinctive hats couldn't be made from faux fur or other fabrics.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said that military officials will meet with potential designers in October to discuss alternative fabrics, adding that in the meantime, the military will work to maintain the existing stock of caps to minimize the need for more bearskins.
Five army regiments wear the 45-centimetre black hats during ceremonial duties at London's Buckingham Palace and other royal sites. |

There is no "bear slaughter" - that's a complete and utter fabrication in news reports, Every replacement bearskin, whilst still being made with real bear fur, is only produced from bears that were either killed in road accidents or to be culled anyway under State licenses. [About 8 pelts a year I beleave]
Very few new bearskin caps are manufactured nowadays as bearskins will, with good care and refurbishment, last in excess of one hundred years. These days a stock of bearskin caps are kept in central store and issued to each battalion only when they take up ceremonial duties, unlike in the past, when each guardsman had his own cap.
Scrapping the existing hats will not bring back the dead bears, and until such a time as a suitable replacement is found, should remain in use. _________________ Sua Tela Tonanti |

Or go for somthing else like wolf skin.
Personally i think they should stick with the bearskin, grizzy bears are horrible things anyway as they attack innocent campers . |
